GigWorkerTaxTax estimates for 1099 and gig workers

About GigWorkerTax

GigWorkerTax is a free tax estimator for people paid on a 1099: delivery and rideshare drivers, shoppers, freelancers and other independent contractors. Nobody withholds tax from that income, so the question "how much should I keep aside?" comes up every week. The estimator answers it with the working shown.

What it calculates

  • Self-employment tax (Social Security and Medicare)
  • Federal income tax after the standard deduction and the qualified business income deduction
  • State income tax at a typical rate for your state, or your own rate
  • Quarterly estimated payments and their due dates
  • The effect of common deductions: expenses, mileage, home office, health insurance, retirement contributions

Where the figures come from

Every rate, threshold and limit comes from IRS publications and the yearly inflation adjustments. The methodology page lists each figure, the rule it belongs to and its source. If a number looks wrong, write to us and we will check it against the source.

What it is not

GigWorkerTax is an independent site. It is not connected to the IRS, any state tax agency or any gig platform, and it does not prepare or file returns. Results are estimates for planning; the disclaimer explains what that covers.
